The Railsplitters welcomed Anderson University for a double-header today. The women's team was looking to topple the 14th-ranked Trojans while the men's team looked to keep their perfect SAC record in tact.
The student atmosphere set the scene for the women's game, but unfortunately the Railsplitters fell in double-overtime. The men's team fared much better against the Trojans, defeating Anderson 85-72 in a particularly one-sided game.
As for me, I was about to take part in my first game with the Railsplitters. The first task at hand was to pick up the food for the hospitality room. Cameron Whicker had me pick the food up from Food City. After I delivered the food, it was time to set up the hospitality room. This move was important to help encourage fans to stick around for both games, which combined to total roughly three hours.
There was a minor hiccup before the game as the student who was working the ticket booth was late. In order to assistant the program, I handled the table until the student arrived. After she did, we had a little time to relax until halftime of the women's game - when the limbo competition took place.
The limbo competition also hit a hiccup when the employee who was handling the contest didn't show either. The issue was quickly handled when the sponsor was changed, allowing the contest to commence. The winner received a $50 gift certificate. The second promotion of the night was a raffle ticket and hula-hoop contest. The event ran smoothly without error.
While Cam was taking care of the second promotion, I was gathering a high school basketball team to take a tour of the women's locker room. Once the team was gathered, the women's coach gave them a tour of the facility.
My first game as a Railsplitter interested me because I actually got a chance to see behind the scenes of an athletic event. I saw how one absence can disrupt the flow of the event and put an entire promotion at risk.
