Lincoln Memorial University Work Plan
For my mentorship opportunity, I will be working in the athletic department of Lincoln Memorial University. The university is part of NCAA Division II and a member of the South Atlantic Conference. With multiple scholarship programs within the university, the athletic department has allowed me to continue learning multiple facets of the administration side of athletics.
Reporting: I will be reporting to several different members of the department. Athletic director Matthew Green will oversee my overall progress during the mentorship. I will also be reporting to assistant athletic director Cameron Whicker on items pertaining to marketing and fundraising, and I will report to director of athletic communications Scott Erland regarding press releases and preview stories.
Duties: I will be covering a wide variety of duties including writing preview stories and press releases, coordinating special promotions and fundraising events, assisting in marketing efforts, and attending budget meetings.
Learning Objectives: My goal is to learn more about the rules and regulations of working in a Division II school. I also want to learn more about marketing, fundraising, promotions, and the overall job of running an athletic department.
Compensation: This opportunity is an internship. There is no monetary compensation for this position.
Hours/Duration: I will be completing a 200 hour mentorship with the university. My hours will vary from week-to-week based on events taking place. To start, I will be working from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday and Wednesday.
Expected Outcome: I will use this opportunity to maximize my understanding of athletic administration. I hope to learn more about the ins and outs of fundraising, marketing, promotions and how the department works as a whole. Working in each aspect of the Railsplitters' department will give me a better understanding of how the athletic administration works.
