On Saturday, Lincoln Memorial softball squared off against SAC foe Coker in a doubleheader. The Lady Railsplitters survived a late game rally from the Lady Cobras in the first game to win 4-3 in extra innings.
In the second game, it was Coker who had to survive a surging LMU. After Coker took an early 2-0 lead, the Lady Railsplitters rattled off three runs over the next four innings to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
A sixth inning Cobra run tied the game up and eventually forced extra innings. In the eighth, Coker outscored LMU 3-2 to defeat the 'Splitters 6-5.
For me, I was in charge of working the scoreboard and handling the intro music and music in-between innings. It was the first time I ever worked a scoreboard, but it actually was fairly easy after an inning or so. Keeping up with the batting order and intro music was difficult at first because you have such a short period of time between playing the music and the batter getting in the box (in which the music must stop).
The main thing I learned from my experience in working a softball game is the need to be diverse. At small schools, athletic directors and other game management personnel may need to step in at a moments notice to fill a need. In this case, I was contacted a day before the game because other personnel were at the National Championship game in Texas and were in need of assistance.
