The Lady Railsplitters opened conference play on Saturday when they squared off against Newberry. It was the second lacrosse match for me this season and the first women’s lacrosse game for me this year. In a heartbreaker, the Lady Wolves went on a run in the final six minutes to clinch a 10-9 victory over Lincoln Memorial.
With post-season play for the men’s basketball team in full effect, none of the athletic directors were on hand for the game. Scott Erland was the game manager for the event. My job, as it has been in the past, was to spot for the press box. This includes recording penalties, points and assist for the game. Unlike in the past, we did not have a radio to call the information to the box. Instead, we used text to relay the information.
The game was a learning experience, as was my first men’s lacrosse game. The women’s game features less contact and a more technical approach. Many of the fouls result in “play-on” situations as opposed to the men’s game. There were several rule changes as well. For example, when there is a penalty, the ref places the women back in the same position when the foul took place and then restarts play.
Being exposed to these new sports – lacrosse isn’t a big sport down here in southeast Kentucky – is really eye opening and is sure to help in the future.
