The NCAA Division II Tournament and a couple of other events took place at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, creating a busy weekend for the athletic department. My day started at 12:30 p.m. as I arrived to the first lacrosse game of a double header.
Unfortunately, both the men and the women lost their game to Catawba by large margins.
During both games, I was in charge of recording and radioing penalties to the press box. With the NCAA Tournament taking place at the same time, none of the athletic directors or the sports information director was at the game. Myself, Joe Swanson and another assistant managed the game.
The men’s game went smoothly with the only issue being the game clock lapsing in five second intervals. It wasn’t a big deal for the men’s game because we had a stop watch field side. That wasn’t the case for the women’s game. The refs were much stricter during that game.
The refs during the women’s game would only allow us to use the game clock for penalty releases. This resulted in a conundrum because the clock would change every five to six seconds. To top it off, the radio died making communication with the press box complicated. We ended up making it work essentially by estimating the release time for penalties and having the announcing count down with 10 seconds remaining in the halves..
After the lacrosse matches were over, it was time to head to the arena to help with the tournament. By the time I arrived, the second session had begun, and it was halftime of LMU’s game against Lander. The Railsplitters won a lopsided decision to advance to Sunday. There was very little to do once we got there. I assisted with clean up before leaving for the night.
